H Tags the definitive guide

In order to deep dive into the world of h tags, we first need to understand what are these and what does it do in terms of benefiting an SEO campaign. Well, H tags are nothing but are a part of HTML properties that are used for highlighting heading in different sizes. There are 6 h tags namely:

  1. H1: This tag denotes the first tag within the series and is often referred to as the most important heading within a particular webpage.
  2. H2: This tag denotes the second tag within the series and is often referred to as the most important sub-heading within a particular webpage.
  3. H3: This tag denotes the third tag within the series and is often referred to as the most important short mini heading within a particular webpage.
  4. H4: This tag denotes the fourth tag within the series and is often referred to as the second most important mini heading within a particular webpage.
  5. H5: This tag denotes the fifth tag within the series and is often referred to as the small highlights heading within a particular webpage.
  6. H6: This tag denotes the first tag within the series and its least used for small notes and highlights

As a part of SEO practice, h1 tags should always contain the exact match keyword as it indicates search engines as the most important topic which is being communicated within a particular webpage.  This easily helps spider to understand the context of the page and thus helps in proper ranking and visibility.

Whereas, on the other hand, h2 tags can be used with LSI keywords. Moreover, h2 tags are used as sub-headings which means search engines treat them as a semantic term that will depict a topic within a landing page.

H3 tags, on the other hand, are used for mini heading and long-tail keywords can be used on phrase match keywords. These tags are also important as it helps search engines in optimizing a landing page based on long-tail keywords. This is a very good strategy as it helps in leveraging visibility.

Lastly, coming down to h4 – h6 tags, there are low hanging h tags that have little or less weight and can be used to highlight small areas.

Please note as per the ideal SEO theory, no page can have more than 1 h1 tag, and also h1 and title tag can’t be duplicated.

Also, we can have n no. of h2 tags.
